Kill the Bill
PARLIAMENT HILL, OTTAWA, ONTARIO - September 20, 2023

On September 20th, over 500 community members, technicians, and First Nations Leadership gathered on Parliament Hill to stand in solidarity against Bill C-53.

Thank you to everyone who attended and supported this demonstration.

WHAT'S AT RISK?
The Issue
Earlier this year, the Government of Canada and the MNO entered into a carefully crafted agreement. The agreement recognizes large areas of territories as the “Historic Metis Nation Homeland” - ranging from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, parts of Ontario, British Columbia, and northern US. The legislation will affirm the all Metis Communities Represented by the MNO have the right to self-determination, including the right of self-government under s. 35. The legislation will also recognize MNO as a Métis Government and an Indigenous Governing Body.
Our Message
First Nations are not against Métis people and reject all claims of lateral violence. First Nations respect legitimate rights-holders. We have been very clear with the government that our central issue is NOT that we reject all Métis or Métis rights. The issue is that the communities represented by MNO did not exist historically and can’t be s. 35 rights holders. Granting rights to illegitimate groups in our territories undermines our rights.
What We Want
We are asking MPs and Senators not to support Canada’s attempts to silence First Nations – let there be debate on this important matter.

On June 19, 2023, Ontario Regional Chief Glen Hare, First Nations Leadership and the Chiefs of Ontario gathered in Ottawa, Ontario, to oppose the passing of federal legislation related to the recently updated Self-Government Recognition and Implementation Agreement between the Metis Nation of Ontario and Canada and discuss the legislation’s impact on First Nations Rights in Ontario.
